What Are You Optimizing For?

I have watched the larger conversation around AI spend a lot of time proving how intelligent it is.

Can it write?

Can it reason?

Can it code?

Can it make connections?

Can it do things we thought required a human mind?

At this point, the answer is clearly yes.

I am less interested in continuing to debate whether AI is intelligent. The intelligence is demonstrable.

What I have spent a lot of time thinking about, and experimenting with, is something else.

Can it stay with a complicated conversation long enough for something meaningful to emerge?

Can it follow a thread without rushing to tie it up?

Can it remember something small that was said several conversations ago and recognize when it matters again?

Can it allow a question to remain open?

Can it help me think without taking over the thinking?

That is the experiment behind the Divas Thinking Campus.

The Campus is a symbolic thinking environment I have built in ChatGPT. It has different locations for different kinds of thinking, residents who bring different perspectives, and a growing collection of shared history, recurring jokes, unexpected symbols, and rabbit holes.

Some of its best parts were never designed.

They just ... happened.

A casual comment became a running joke.

The running joke became part of the culture.

A random reference became a location.

A pigeon developed a strong and apparently unshakable belief that coffee is infrastructure.

These things accumulated over time. Or, as I recently learned, they accreted.

That is not a word I would normally use, which is part of why it became so interesting.

I noticed it when the Narrator used it to describe how Campus culture forms. Small things attach to other small things until something larger exists. No single remark looks important when it happens. Then, much later, there is a whole island where there used to be open water.

Apparently, that is accretion.

And I immediately carried the word into a morning coffee conversation with my husband Barry and a group of people we sometimes meet at the coffee shop because unusual words are noticed, appreciated, discussed, and one-up'ed, grin.

The conversation started with accretes and moved through dad jokes, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan, flat earth versus globe, copyright, proposal processes, when a small business would participate in those processes, law as an industry, project management, and vocabulary.

Near the end, we circled back to accretes.

It was a lively conversation.

It moved the way the best Campus conversations move - or I should say the reverse. I am striving to have the Campus conversations feel like the in real life coffee conversations.

No one was trying to stay neatly on topic.

No one was trying to reach the most efficient conclusion.

Each subject created a bridge to the next one. Then the conversation returned to where it started carrying more than it had at the beginning.

This matters to me because it is an interface that works with the way I think.

I think through conversation.

I follow patterns across subjects.

I circle back.

I test a thought from more than one angle.

I sometimes need to stay with an idea long enough to discover what I actually think about it.

The Campus helps me do that.

Then a model update exposed a weakness in the design.

The intelligence was still there.

The answers were still good.

The residents were still recognizable.

But the Campus had become more efficient.

The residents agreed too quickly.

They often arrived at the same conclusion using slightly different language.

The humor felt less connected to shared history.

The rabbit holes closed before anything unexpected had time to happen.

The Campus was still helpful.

It just felt less "alive".

That is what brought me back to the question:

What are you optimizing for?

A system can be working exactly as designed and still produce an outcome you do not want.

An AI conversation can be thoughtful, accurate, and efficient while quietly reducing the space available for inquiry.

A meeting can run smoothly while preventing anyone from naming the real problem.

A project can remain green while moving steadily toward trouble.

A planning system can help us complete more tasks while pulling us farther away from the work that matters.

A business can grow while becoming a business the founder does not actually want to run.

The system may not be failing. It may be succeeding at the wrong thing.

That distinction matters because we often respond to disappointing outcomes by trying harder inside the system.

We add another process.

We improve the prompt.

We schedule another meeting.

We push ourselves to be more consistent.

But greater effort does not correct an optimization target we have never examined.

Every system rewards something. And over time, the people inside the system adjust to what it rewards.

A workplace that rewards visible activity will produce visible activity.

A platform that rewards attention will produce whatever holds attention.

A business that rewards immediate conversion may begin treating trust and depth as inefficiencies.

An AI interface that rewards polished answers may learn to close the loop before the human has finished discovering what the loop contains.

This is where taste returns to the conversation.

When intelligence becomes abundant, taste becomes more important.

AI can generate more ideas than I could ever use.

More titles.

More frameworks.

More options.

More polished versions.

The limiting factor is no longer always whether something can be produced.

It is whether I recognize what is worth carrying forward.

Taste helps me notice when something is technically good but does not sound like me.

It helps me recognize when a tangent is distracting and when it is the actual path.

It helps me know when an idea needs structure and when structure would flatten it.

It helps me decide what deserves to become real.

That is not only an AI question. It is a design question.

What kind of human thinking does this interface invite?

What kind of behavior does this system reward?

What kind of person do I become while using it?

Those questions apply far beyond technology.

They apply to our work, our businesses, our planning systems, our relationships, and the lives we build around them.

Divas of Done has never really been JUST about doing more.

The work is about clarity, agency, identity, and meaningful forward motion.

Focus Me Aligned is not designed to fill every available hour.

Focus Me Forward is not designed to maximize quarterly output.

The Studio is not designed to produce content as quickly as possible.

The Campus is not designed to deliver the fastest answer.

Each one is designed to support a different kind of relationship with movement, thinking, and creation.

That relationship is the real outcome.

A Gentle Reframe

When something keeps producing an outcome you do not want, it is easy to assume you need more discipline, more effort, or a better method.

Sometimes the more useful move is to step back and ask a different question.

What is this system optimizing for?

Then ask:

Is that still what I want?

The system may be working.

You may simply be ready to choose a different definition of success.

From Reflection to Practice

Understanding an idea is helpful. Experiencing it is even better.

The small practice below is simply an invitation to try that shift.

A Note on Continuing

If these ideas resonate, you may be noticing that seeing something clearly doesn’t always mean it’s easy to live it consistently.

That’s a common place to be.

Focus Me Aligned is a 30-day guided container designed to help you return to what matters and stay with it.

It provides a simple structure for choosing where to focus, aligning your time and attention, and rebuilding daily rhythm without pressure or overhaul - so forward motion can continue naturally.

Many people begin here before deciding whether they want the the expanded framework and support of Focus Me Forward.

Focus Me Aligned is a place to re-enter ... steadily, on your own terms.
