Thinking-first. AI-accelerated.

I keep hearing this phrase lately ... “approach your day with an AI-first mindset.”


And I get it. I am a techie and have been working with AI for a while now.


AI is fast. It’s capable. It can generate, organize, summarize, suggest. It can take something that might take an hour and compress it into minutes. And I know the mindset is “when you go to do something, think Can AI do it?”


On the surface, that sounds like progress. I have actually done some of it.


But something about that framing keeps catching for me.


Not in a loud way. Just enough to feel… slightly off.


Because “AI-first” subtly changes the starting point.


Instead of asking:

  • What actually matters here?

  • What am I trying to move forward?


It asks:

  • What can the tool do?


And that shift is small… but it carries through everything that follows.


Here is where it gets tricky.


Because if I start with the tool, I notice I move differently.


Faster, maybe.


But not always from a clear place.


It’s easy to step into motion before I’ve actually decided what matters.


And the movement starts to feel a little scattered. Like I’m responding instead of leading.


I’m starting to see that “AI-first” isn’t just about using a tool.


It’s a posture.


One that assumes the bottleneck is execution.


That if I can just move faster, generate more, produce more… things will fall into place.


But in my work, and honestly in most of what I care about, that’s not the bottleneck.


The bottleneck is usually discernment. Choosing...

  • What actually matters.

  • What is worth moving.

  • What to leave alone.


So I’ve been playing with the frame.


Not away from AI. (I am a geek and I am having fun playing with AI.)


But toward something that feels more grounded.


Thinking-first. AI-accelerated.


Changing that order feels more like me.


I start by asking...

  • What is in motion?

  • What am I trying to move forward?

  • What actually is my personal center of gravity right now?


Then I bring AI in.

  • To expand a thought.

  • To challenge an assumption.

  • To help me see what I might be missing.

  • To refine language.

  • To test structure.


Not to decide for me.

Not to lead.


But to accelerate what’s already becoming clear.


And shift is real when I work that way.


There’s less noise.

Less output for the sake of output.

More intention.


The movement feels… cleaner.


I’m also noticing this in the broader space.


A lot of the “AI-first” conversation feels tightly tied to speed.


To scale.

To doing more, faster.


And that can work. It does work - for certain kinds of business cases.


But it also tends to amplify whatever thinking is underneath it.


Clear thinking becomes clearer.

Unclear thinking becomes… louder.


Which makes me wonder if the real skill isn’t using AI.


It’s learning how to think well enough that acceleration is useful.


Because AI can generate infinite options. And those options are getting better and better each day.


But it doesn’t decide what matters.

It doesn’t choose direction.

It doesn’t carry the weight of what you’re actually trying to build.


That part stays human.

You don’t need to start with the tool.


You can start with what you’re actually trying to move.


And then let the tool help you move it further, faster, and more clearly.


Not first.


Just… in the right place.
